What are your top bathroom renovation planning tips?
Plan ahead, a good renovator will usually be booked out at least 2-3 months in advance. Even when not using a professional renovator, give yourself that lead time to book in any trades people you will need, think carefully about the best configuration of your bathroom, choose and order tiles, flooring, and any bath/shower/vanity and plumbing hardware well in advance, making sure they are all on site before your contractor turns up. Another tip is to go for a frameless glass shower, it can really uplift the look of a bathroom.
Where are the areas a homeowner can save on cost of a bathroom?
Do as much of the work on your own as you are able.Shop around for the likes of vanities and plumbing hardware as there is a lot of quality options available at a reasonable cost if you give yourself time to look. Having a fully tiled bathroom is the most the most expensive of options, so bear that in mind when planning. If you were handy, you could do your own tiling, but note a bad tiling job is very visible in a bathroom.
Where are the areas they should not skimp on cost? The structural and infrastructure work requiring professionals. Waterproofing, requires someone accredited to do the work. Anything connecting to your waste has to be done by a plumber; the same applies to electrical equipment like heated towel rails being installed by an electrician.
What are the most common and/or worst mistakes you've seen in a bathroom renovations? Water damage caused by improper waterproofing, it's just not worth skimping on. Whole bathrooms and adjoining rooms may need stripped back to framing and completely rebuilt as a result . Also, the tiles - although they are cosmetic - just bear in mind you will see any mistakes each and every time you are in there
